Finding outstanding games for girls is getting easier.
Not only are more games explicitly targeting female players, but more games are also becoming inclusive enough that everyone is given a way to identify with the story.
If you are looking for PlayStation 4 games that are well-received among female players, though, there are a few things for which you can look. You’ll generally want a strong story or a good cooperative element, as well as a skill curve that encourages both dedication and experimentation.

Below are a handful of games that have all of those elements.

Dragon Quest 11

Don’t be fooled by the number on this entry – Dragon Quest 11 is as good a place to jump into the series as any other. Yes, it’s part of a long-running series of games but it’s honestly also one of the best starter JRPGs that you’re going to find. Combining a good story with excellent anime-esque visuals, it’s a great choice for any girl who enjoys story-based games, RPG combat, or has an interest in anime.

This one tops list the for games for girls because of its focus on story. It’s got a handful of great protagonists and a strong plot throughline, which helps to drive engagement in the game. If you’re looking for a game for the young woman in your life who really enjoys a solid narrative experience, this is one of the best that you’ll find. It’s also a game that offers over seventy hours of gameplay, which is great for those looking for an immersive experience.

Overcooked 2

Yes, this is a cooking game but it’s not exactly the kind of cooking game that might immediately come to mind. Similar to games like Papa’s Pizzeria or Diner Dash, this is a game that’s all about time management and team-work, one in which players have to put together dishes while contending with a variety of cartoony obstacles. It’s a clever game that’s great at parties and even fun to play alone, though it really shines the most when you have a friend or two who can play with you.

Overcooked 2 is the second iteration of the series, building on the strengths of the popular first entry in order to improve itself. There’s really no need to play the first game, as the game is great about teaching players the mechanics from the first level onward. If you’re looking for a PS4 game for girls that can provide a great co-op experience while still allowing for some great laughs, this might be the best choice for you. Don’t be fooled by the cute graphics, though – this game is hard enough that mastery requires a great deal of dedication.

At this point, it’s almost unheard of for a person who plays video games to not have at least heard about Minecraft. Legitimately the most popular game in the world, it’s got a simple premise, but it can provide thousands of hours of entertainment. If there’s a young woman in your life who enjoy building things and exercising her imagination, this game is a must.

If you aren’t familiar with Minecraft, think of the game as a kind of virtual LEGO world. Players are invited to try to survive in a fairly simple world, one with a few hostile creatures and many different ways to build new structures. In survival mode, players can build increasingly complex structures and tools in order to reach an endgame state. In the creative mode, players are given access to the entire sandbox in order to build the world of their dreams. This game is a must for anyone who wants to render their own creations in a virtual world.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a first-party title that’s exclusive to the PlayStation 4. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic future world, players take on the role of a young woman who’s in search of her own destiny, taking on mechanical monstrosities as she uncovers the secrets of an incredibly well-realized world. One of the best-looking and best-performing games on the console, it’s widely cited as one of the best reasons to pick up a PS4.

This is one of the few games that has an excellent female protagonist. Aloy is strong, smart, and wily, able to survive in a way that few others in her world can manage. It’s very easy to care about the character’s struggles and adventures, and she provides a great point of identification for many young women. If you’re buying for a girl who doesn’t particularly identify with female protagonists, you may still want to give this game a try simply because it’s so much fun. This isn’t just a great game for girls – it’s a great game for anyone who has a PlayStation 4.

Life is Strange

Life is Strange was a sleeper hit a few years ago, a unique adventure game that puts players in the shoes of a young woman named Max who has the inexplicable ability to rewind time. An incredibly story-heavy game, it’s a throwback to adventure games of old while still adding a lot of modern touches. It’s one of the best story-based games out there, spawning not only a huge fanbase but also two spin-offs and a sequel. If you are buying for someone who loves intricate plots, this is the perfect game.

Life is Strange also hits the sweet spot when it comes to presenting teenage protagonists. While some of the dialog can be stilted, the game does have a very realistic view of adolescence. It’s a good game for a girl who is looking for something that’s a little more akin to her own real experiences, even if the coating around the game itself is quite fantastical. Largely down to earth, this is a game that’s great for anyone who is exploring what it means to grow up and how much she values her own friendships. Watch out though, the age rating on this one is 16 due to some graphic content.
